SBIRT Core Curriculum

The Employee Assistance Professional’s Guide to Screening, Brief Intervention and Treatment fills an essential gap. Six national associations representing clinician treating EAP clients have brought together in one place the training and tools busy EA clinicians need to help clients who drink too much. The Employee Assistance Professional’s Guide to Screening, Brief Intervention and Treatment is specifically designed for EA clinicians who work in office-based practices, on site in businesses and in call centers.

The Employee Assistance Professional’s Guide to Screening, Brief Intervention and Treatment will teach clinicians to:
  • Screen for risky and dependent alcohol, drug and prescription opiate use;
  • Deliver effective brief counseling based on motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral treatment techniques;
  • Collaborate with physicians providing addiction medications and specialty addiction treatment programs; and,
  • Deliver case management and recovery supports for workers with substance use problems.

The program will provide specific guidance and tools to:
  • Apply SBIRT techniques to other frequently encountered issues such as depression, anxiety disorders and tobacco addictions;
  • Understand family dynamics of the alcoholic family in order to better support both the family members, as well as the EAP client, with alcohol related issues;
  • Assess and treat older workers whose use of alcohol or prescription pain medications that may create health and work-related problems;
  • Recognize special considerations for employees with risky alcohol use who are in DOT regulated and safety-sensitive positions; and Connect clients to mutual support groups.
